Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo will host a memorial service in honor of the late former U.S. President James Earl (Jimmy) Carter on Sunday in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Carter, a close ally of Obasanjo, passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100 in Plains, Georgia, USA. He holds the distinction of being the longest-living U.S. president and the first to reach 100 years of age.

The announcement was made in a statement on Saturday by Kehinde Akinyemi, Special Assistant on Media to Obasanjo. The former Nigerian leader and prominent African statesman will lead the memorial service to celebrate the life and legacy of Carter, who served as the 39th President of the United States.

The service will take place at the Chapel of Christ, The Glorious King, located within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM.

Rev. Israel Akanji, President of the Baptist Convention, will deliver a special sermon during the occasion. Obasanjo is also expected to give a tribute titled “Jimmy Carter: The Departure of a Titan,” reflecting on Carter’s remarkable life and their enduring friendship.

Carter’s presidency and post-presidency work, including his advocacy for peace, democracy, and humanitarian causes, left an indelible mark globally. The memorial service is expected to highlight these contributions while celebrating the bond shared between the two statesmen.
