The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has pledged to meet the bail conditions of human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, who is currently facing defamation charges.

The Mandate News reports that Farotimi was granted bail by an Ekiti Magistrate Court on Friday following a defamation case involving senior legal practitioner Afe Babalola. His bail conditions include a ₦30 million bond, two sureties (one of whom must be a property owner), the surrender of his passport, and a restriction on granting media interviews.

Tanko Yunusa, former spokesperson for Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign, confirmed Obi’s commitment in a statement shared on Friday via his X (formerly Twitter) account.

According to Yunusa, Obi’s decision aligns with his dedication to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the matter is resolved through lawful channels.

“I consulted His Excellency, Peter Obi, as the leader of the Obidient Movement. As an advocate of due process and order, he has agreed to fulfill Dele Farotimi’s bail requirements,” Yunusa stated.

Obi also expressed his appreciation to all stakeholders involved, emphasizing the importance of resolving the situation in the best interest of all parties and the integrity of the legal system.

“He extends his sincere gratitude to everyone concerned,” Yunusa concluded.
