In a surprising turn of events, U.S. Senator for Kentucky, Rand Paul, has endorsed billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk as a candidate for Speaker of the House. Senator Paul expressed his support in a statement shared Thursday on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Paul highlighted the unconventional nature of the endorsement, noting that the Speaker of the House is not required to be a sitting member of Congress.

“The Speaker of the House need not be a member of Congress. Nothing would disrupt the swamp more than electing Elon Musk… think about it… nothing’s impossible. (Not to mention the joy at seeing the collective establishment, aka ‘uniparty,’ lose their ever-lovin’ minds),” Paul remarked.

The senator’s comments come at a critical juncture for House Speaker Mike Johnson, who faces mounting backlash from within the GOP over his handling of an end-of-year spending package.

On Tuesday, Speaker Johnson advanced a measure to fund the government through March 14, allocating over $100 billion in disaster relief and $10 billion in economic support for farmers. The bill also introduced provisions aimed at health care reform and enhancing transparency in live event ticket sales.

However, the spending package drew sharp criticism from key Republican figures. In a joint statement on Wednesday, President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance condemned the plan, describing it as “the most foolish and inept thing” ever undertaken by Republicans in Congress. They warned that failing to address the nation’s debt ceiling by 2025 could have severe consequences.

Elon Musk, whom Trump has tapped to co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in his incoming administration, also voiced strong opposition to the bill.

Taking to X on Wednesday, Musk urged voters to hold lawmakers accountable, stating that “any lawmaker who supports this outrageous bill should be voted out in two years.” He added emphatically, “This bill should not pass.”

As tensions rise within the Republican Party, Speaker Johnson’s team is reportedly exploring alternative spending plans to avert a potential government shutdown ahead of Friday’s deadline, according to Politico.

Musk’s unconventional endorsement and increasing influence within GOP circles underscore the shifting dynamics as the party grapples with internal divisions and pressure to implement fiscal reforms.
