Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has explained his decision to bench Amad Diallo in favor of Alejandro Garnacho for their FA Cup third-round clash against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Amorim’s starting XI raised eyebrows as Diallo, who has been in impressive form in recent weeks, was a surprise omission. Garnacho, however, was handed a starting role against Mikel Arteta’s side.
Speaking to the media before kickoff, Amorim revealed that Diallo had experienced a minor issue during the week, which influenced his decision. He also praised Garnacho’s recent performances and efforts in training, emphasizing that the young Argentine deserved his starting spot.
“Amad had a small issue during the week, and that’s why he doesn’t start,” Amorim said, as quoted by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
He added:
“I like the way Ale Garnacho plays… he is playing well and deserves to start. The way he is training, we felt it was a good opportunity to see Garnacho start the game.”
Garnacho has shown consistent improvement, earning trust from Amorim in key matches. Meanwhile, Diallo, a fan favorite for his recent displays, will be looking to regain his place in the starting lineup once fully fit.
The decision highlights Amorim’s focus on balancing fitness concerns and rewarding performance in his squad selectio
