The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, urging him to address their demands or face an unprecedented shutdown of hospitals across the territory.
Dr. George Ebong, President of ARD, delivered the warning during a press conference at Wuse District Hospital, Abuja, on Monday.
While commending the minister for his strides in infrastructural development within the FCT, Dr. Ebong emphasized the pressing need to prioritize the welfare of medical professionals, describing them as “on the verge of extinction” due to economic challenges.
“The minister has demonstrated commendable commitment to fixing abandoned infrastructural projects. However, doctors are the human equivalent of abandoned projects. We urge him to channel the same energy towards addressing the challenges faced by healthcare professionals,” Ebong stated.
He further underscored the urgency of the situation, stressing that if no action is taken within the stipulated 14 days, the ARD would be left with no choice but to proceed with what he termed the “deadliest shutdown” of medical services in the nation’s capital.
The ultimatum highlights growing concerns over the state of healthcare services and the well-being of medical personnel in the FCT.
