Nollywood star Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha has opened up about the extensive preparation she undertook for her role in the newly released Netflix series Seven Doors.
In the series, Chukwuka-Akpotha takes on the character of an Igbo queen married to a Yoruba king, played by Femi Adebayo. The storyline weaves themes of kingship, kinship, love, betrayal, and restitution, with Chukwuka-Akpotha’s portrayal demanding a seamless delivery of Yoruba dialogue.
During a recent interview on TVC, where she appeared alongside Adebayo, the actress revealed that learning Yoruba was a critical part of her preparation for the role.
“I had to learn Yoruba for my role in Seven Doors,” Chukwuka-Akpotha stated. “The Yoruba spoken in the series wasn’t the everyday version commonly used in Lagos. I had to focus on mastering the correct tone and pronunciation to ensure authenticity.”
Chukwuka-Akpotha’s dedication to accurately portraying her character highlights the evolving standards of Nollywood productions, where linguistic and cultural accuracy plays a key role in storytelling.
Her co-star, Femi Adebayo, praised her commitment, noting that her ability to deliver lines fluently in Yoruba enriched the overall authenticity of the series.
Seven Doors has already received acclaim for its intricate plot and cultural depth, with audiences lauding the performances and the chemistry between the lead actors.
Chukwuka-Akpotha’s willingness to step out of her comfort zone and learn a new language reflects Nollywood’s growing emphasis on diverse and culturally immersive storytelling, setting a high bar for future productions.
